'Maa Bhen' star Madhuri Dixit recalls her childhood in JB Nagar, where her love for dance first began: 'Main jab teen saal ki thi'

Madhuri Dixit may be celebrated today as Bollywood’s iconic ‘Dhak Dhak’ girl, but the actress recently looked back at the neighbourhood where her love for dance first took shape. During an appearance on ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5’, Madhuri shared memories from her childhood in Mumbai’s JB Nagar and revealed how the area played a key role in her artistic journey.

Where the passion for dance began for Madhuri Dixit

Speaking about her early years to IANS, Madhuri revealed that she started learning dance when she was just three years old. A dance school in JB Nagar became the place where her lifelong relationship with the art form began. Recalling those days, she said, “Dance maine wahan shuru kiya tha pehle. Main jab teen saal ki thi, wahi pe JB Nagar mein dance school tha. Dance karna shuru kiya. Itni saari memories hain wahan.” (That’s where I first began learning dance. When I was three years old, there was a dance school in JB Nagar, and that’s where I started dancing. I have so many memories associated with that place. )The actress explained that even when her debut film ‘Abodh’ released, her family was still living in the same neighbourhood, making the locality an important witness to the beginning of her career.

How the success of ‘Tezaab’ changed life at home

While JB Nagar remained home through the early stages of her acting career, things changed dramatically after the release of ‘Tezaab’, the film that transformed Madhuri into a household name. Reflecting on that phase, she shared, “Meri pehli film jab release huyi, ‘Abodh’, tab bhi hum wahan the. ‘Tezaab’ ke baad phir hum log nikle wahan se kyunki wahan security nahi thi, toh phir baad mein mushkil hone lagi.” (We were still living there when my first film, ‘Abodh’, was released. But after ‘Tezaab’, we had to move out because there was no security, and life gradually became difficult after that)The actress recalled how fans would arrive at her doorstep without notice, making it increasingly difficult for the family to maintain privacy.“After ‘Tezaab’, koi bhi aa jaata tha ghar pe. ‘Madam ne bulaya humko,’ suitcase saara leke aa gaye the.” (After ‘Tezaab’, anyone would turn up at our house. They would say, ‘Madam has invited us,’ and arrive carrying all their suitcases as if they were coming to stay)Beyond the memories of dance and stardom, Madhuri fondly remembered the close-knit community spirit that defined her childhood. According to her, neighbours weren’t just people living nearby, they were an extension of the family.“Jo neighbours the woh bhi family members hua karte the. Hum bacche kisi ke ghar mein chale jaate the, ‘Aunty, aap pakode banaiye, aapke bahut pasand hain humein.’ Woh jo relationships the, amazing the.” (Our neighbours were like family members. As children, we would walk into anyone’s house and say, ‘Aunty, please make pakoras, we really love the ones you make.’ Those relationships were truly special and amazing). She contrasted those experiences with modern urban living, where people often know very little about those living next door.

Madhuri Dixit’s childhood memories that still remain special

The actress described JB Nagar as a place where children spent their days together, sharing laughter, games and even occasional scoldings. It was an environment built on warmth, familiarity and community bonds. “Kyunki ab aise gharon mein rehte hain jahan pata bhi nahi hota aapke neighbours kaun hain. Ek family jaisa atmosphere tha JB Nagar mein, woh bahut kamaal ka tha. Bacche saath khelte bhi the, pitte bhi the saath mein sab log. It was amazing.” (Nowadays, we live in homes where we don’t even know who our neighbours are. In JB Nagar, there was a family-like atmosphere, and it was truly wonderful. All the children played together, and even got scolded together. Everyone shared everything as a community. It was amazing. )For Madhuri, the neighbourhood remains closely tied to memories of her first dance lessons, her early films and the simple joys of growing up long before superstardom entered her life.
