This temple in India is believed to have been built by ghosts overnight; 5 things travellers should know

This is not your regular temple. The mystery that surrounds this unique temple in Madhya Pradesh will leave you shocked. Tucked in the quiet village of Sihoniya, Morena district, the Kakanmath Temple is among the most mysterious architectural marvels in India. This 11th century temple, rising dramatically above the plains, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It attracts curious travellers, historians and archaeologists from all over who want to solve the mystery of who built this temple. As per local legend, Kakanmath Temple was built by ghosts in just one night. Well, sounds impossible but that’s exactly what people here believe in. Let’s find out more about this: Fascinating folklore Kakanmath offers a journey into lesser-known spots of India. As per local belief, the temple is built by supernatural beings or ‘ghosts’ that too overnight. The story says that the ‘ghosts’ worked in complete darkness but were forced to abandon the project before sunrise, leaving it incomplete. What historians believeThough these stories are an integral part of the temple’s identity, historians say that the structure dates to the Kachchhapaghata dynasty. Most scholars believe King Kirttiraja was the man behind the construction of the temple between the early 11th century. An engineering marvel without mortar Even without the ghost stories, Kakanmath is unique and extraordinary. The temple was constructed using massive stone blocks, reportedly without conventional mortar or cement. Standing over 30 metres (around 100 feet) tall, the shikhara appears delicate. A fascinating stop for heritage travellersUnlike Madhya Pradesh’s more famous temple destinations, Kakanmath remains relatively uncrowded and lesser-known. There’s a kind of peace which is hard to find elsewhere. Photographers often flock to the place. Sunrise and sunset are simply magical here, creating silhouette when golden light highlights the sandstone. How to reach Kakanmath Temple is located in Sihoniya village, around 35 kilometres from Morena.By air: The nearest airport is Gwalior Airport, which is about 70 km.By train: Morena Junction is the closest railway station with connections to major Indian cities. By road: The temple is accessible via well-connected roads from Gwalior, Morena and nearby towns. Best time to visitOctober and March: During these months, the weather remains pleasant and suitable for sightseeing. Whether you are a traveller, a photographer or a Shiva devotee, Kakanmath Temple is a must visit. The temple is more than just a monument defined by its ghost stories. It is an example of intelligent engineering, artistic ambition and living folklore.
